German Police
Seize Collection of
Costa Rican Artefacts
Munich police have
seized a collection of
Aztec, Indian and Mayan
cultural artefacts that
Costa Rican authorities
claim were removed
illegally from their
country.
Art theft specialists
from Bavaria's criminal
investigations office
estimate the cache,
which includes about
1,000 masks, necklaces
and statues, is worth
us$100 million, said
Ludwig Waldinger, a
spokesman for the
office.
The collection was
brought from Latin
America to Bavaria by an
art collector from Costa
Rica.
The collector, 66, whose
identity has not been
released, could face
criminal charges if it
is determined that he is
not the rightful owner.
