Will Give $2.000 To
Quit Smoking
The Instituto Sobre
Alcoholismo y
Farmacodependencia (IAFA)
is promising giving
us$2.000 to the winners
of the "Deje y Gane
2008" (quit smoking and
win) contest in May.
Tania Palacios, a social
worker with the IAFA,
explains that five
finalists who quit
smoking between May 1
and May 28 will be
chosen and the first
prize winner will be
given the cash, in
addition to a free trip
to Guatemala and a
medical check up at the
Clinica Biblica.
Second place winner will
receive us$1.599, a trip
to Tortuga island for
two and medical checkup.
Third place winner will
receive us$500, a 20"
colour television,
fourth and fifth places
will receive us$500
each.
The finalists will
undergo urine tests and
will qualify for their
prize if they clean of
nicotine.
Contestants, who are
required to be over the
age of 18, will be able
to sign up next month
and there is no cost to
enter.
The IAFA says that after
the contest closes there
will be a follow up on
the winners to see if
they really were able to
quit smoking for good.
Palacios explained that
in similar contests in
the past, 70% of the
participants were men
and that between 26.2%
and 28.7% of those who
took part in the contest
quit smoking for good.
In the 2006, 2.442
people took part and in
2004 there were 3.000
participants.
