Guatemalan Narcos Carry Powerful Weapons
Alleged drug-dealer groups that clashed in a battle in the Zacapa department had powerful weapons as those used by the US army, the Guatemalan media reported on Thursday.

They were carrying 16 AR-15 and M-16 rifles, all made in USA, 14 pistols, several fragmentation grenades and around 500 ammunitions.

"Only a group devoted to drug traffic is able to buy those kinds of weapons and carry them with total impunity," National Civil Police Deputy Director Henry Lopez told the Prensa Libre daily.

The events happened at a beach resort in the Guatemalan eastern region on Tuesday, when two gangs clashed in a shooting that resulted in 11 deaths, seven wounded people and six detainees, including Guatemalan and Mexican citizens.

Preliminary information revealed that there was a combat between followers of Juan Jose Leon, known as Juanucho, supposed head of Zacapa's cartel, and the men of Mexican capo Joaquin, El Chapo, Guzman.

The authorities hold several hypotheses about the killing, including that the local drug dealers robbed drug from the Mexican group or that El Chapo Guzman had ordered to kill the Guatemalan cartel's leader to grab control of the country's northeastern region.
