Nicaragua Will Boost
Milk, Basic Food
Production, Ortega Says

(Bloomberg) - Nicaragua
will increase production
of milk and other basic
foods, President Daniel
Ortega said.
``The most important
thing is food for
everyone, no matter what
political party or
religion people belong
to,'' Ortega said in
Managua today. ``We need
to produce as much as we
can.''
Government officials
have been meeting with
local producers to cut
prices on milk, beans
and other basic staples
after complaints by
Ortega last month that
poor people can't meet
rising food costs.
Ortega, who didn't refer
to specific food
production projections,
said he will request
technical advice from
Brazil and Argentina to
increase output. Farmers
will have greater access
to financing from the
recently formed
development bank funded
by Venezuela, he said.
Nicaragua's export
earnings jumped 40
percent in the first two
months of 2008 from the
same period last year,
buoyed by rising prices
for coffee, beef and
other agricultural
products, according to
government figures
released today.
