Curfew to Minors
Successful, Says Panama

Panama City Mayor Juan
Carlos Navarro said on
Sunday that curfew
imposed on minors has
helped curb crime.
An assessment of the
measure released on
Sunday says the minors'
restriction of movement
is in force from 21:00
local time, also applied
to San Miguelito
district, in the
capital, and Colon city,
in the Atlantic coast,
50 miles from Panama
City.
Authorities said this
decision is aimed at
curbing a wave of
violence involving
youngsters. It envisages
fees from $25 up to the
offenders' parents and
more drastic measures
against reoffenders.
Safety is a main concern
for Panamanians,
according to surveys.
President Martin
Torrijos announced
yesterday before
Parliament that an
additional 2,000 police
officers will join
security patrol service. |
