Only 340 Fines Issued On
Second Day Of Expanded
Vehicular Restriction
In the second day of the
expanded vehicular
restrictions of San José
only 340 drivers were
fined, compared to the
1.005 on the first day.
Friday, vehicles with
the license plate ending
in 9 and 0 were
prohibited from
circulating the
restricted area in the
morning and afternoon
peak hours of 6am and
8:30am and 4:30pm and 7
pm.
The fine for the
violation is ¢5.000
colones.
The expantion of the
restricted area that
includes the
Circunvalación as the
east, west and south
boundaries, and La Uruca,
Tibás and Calle Blancos
on the north, is to
reduce the number of
vehicles in the downtown
core and fuel
consumption.
The director of the
Policía de Tránsito,
Germán Marín, said he
expects that drivers
will get used to the
restrictions and little
by little keep their
cars at home during
their respective days
and less Tránsitos
(traffic officials)
having to be assigned to
the duty, which has
stretched the police
unit's resources.
One thing is for sure,
the presence of traffic
police or not, there has
been a marked reduction
in the number of
vehicles on the road in
the Central Valley. The
usual traffic tie ups
like in San Pedro to the
east and in La Uruca to
the west were less
during Thursday and
Friday.
The high cost of
gasoline is also
contributing to the fact
that many people are
leaving their vehicles
at home during the week
and using public
transportation.
The big test will be on
"payday" Monday when
traditionally Costa
Ricans take out their
cars one or two days
before and for one and
two days after payday,
having cash to fill the
tank.
