Argentina Seeks To End
Child Labour
The Argentine government
has decided to fund
nearly 14,000 working
children in order that
they can continue their
studies, local press
said Wednesday.
About 13,759
scholarships will be
given to employed
children, according to
an agreement signed
Tuesday by Minister of
Labor, Employment and
Social Security Carlos
Tomada and Minister of
Education Carlos
Tedesco.
Representatives of the
United Nation Children's
Fund (UNICEF) and the
International Labour
Organization (ILO)
witnessed the signing
ceremony.
The agreement was
reached in the framework
of the National Plan for
the Prevention and
Eradication of Child
Labor.
The National Plan was
made within the
framework of the
Eradicating Child Labor
campaign by the ILO,
which is being carried
out under the slogan
"Education: the correct
answer to child labor."
According to reports by
the ILO, there are
currently about 165
million children between
the age of 5 to 14 years
employed in the world,
of which two million
work in Argentina.
