Costa Rica Contaminating
Nicaragua’s Border
Despite the protests of
Nicaragua and some
environmental sectors,
Costa Rica’s government
will execute a gold
exploitation project
near the border that
threatens to contaminate
San Juan River.
A report on Channel 11,
local TV, points out
today that Costa Rican
authorities will not
stop the concession to
the mining company,
Industrias Infinito
S.A., in Las Crucitas, a
sector few kilometers
apart from the river
that limits Costa Rica
and Nicaragua.
Environmental sectors
warned about the danger
of contaminating San
Juan River with arsenic,
mercury and other toxic
substances used in gold
mining.
It is their right and
exploitation will begin
on November, said Costa
Rican ambassador in
Managua, Antonio Tacsan
Lam, in quoted
statements to TV
channel.
Meanwhile, Nicaragua
reported the legal
foundation of its demand
to the United Nations
and the Central American
Environment and
Development Commission.
