Colombia With "Cocaine"

Colombia on Thursday
criticized Carla Bruni,
the wife of French
President Nicolas
Sarkozy, for mentioning
Colombian cocaine in one
of her songs in her
latest music album.
Colombian Foreign
Minister Fernando Araujo
called the song an
"apologia for crime."
Cocaine is a problem
that generates violence
and murder in Colombia
and therefore does not
deserve to be considered
in artistic products, he
emphasized.
"The consumption (of
cocaine) is translated
into killings and
violence in Colombia,"
Araujo said. The
government expects "the
whole world help us to
eliminate the drug."
The criticism came after
European dailies carried
the song "You are my
drug" from the new Bruni
album "Comme si de rien
n'tait" (As if nothing),
where Bruni compares
Colombian cocaine and
Afghan heroin to a heady
love relationship.
"You are my drug / More
lethal than Afghan
heroin / More dangerous
than white Colombian
(cocaine)," goes the
song, in an album due to
be released on July 21.
Araujo said he would not
lodge a formal
diplomatic protest
against the song, but
trusted countries and
public opinion for their
awareness of the
Colombian government's
stringent anti-narcotic
efforts.
Colombia is the largest
cocaine producer in the
world. In 2003,the
government launched an
anti-narcotics strategy
expected to help
eradicate by 2008 some
100,000 hectares of coca
plantations, which
provide the raw
materials for the drug.
