Colombia Hopes To Resume
Relations With Ecuador
Colombia hopes to resume
diplomatic ties with
Ecuador during the
Andean Community (CAN)
meeting in Lima next
week, Colombian Foreign
Minister Fernando Araujo
said Wednesday.
Araujo told local RCN
Radio that "I proposed
that Ecuadorian Foreign
Minister take advantage
of that meeting to
re-establish bilateral
relations."
He said both countries
have "positive agendas"
to re-establish their
ties thanks to the
meetings with his
Ecuadorian counterpart
Maria Isabel Salvador,
and discussions with the
Organization of American
States (OAS) as well as
the Carter Center.
The Carter Center was
founded in 1982 by
former U.S. President
Jimmy Carter and former
First Lady Rosalynn
Carter aimed at
advancing human rights
and alleviating
unnecessary human
suffering.
However, Araujo insisted
the possibility of
resuming ties during the
CAN meeting mainly
depends on the
Ecuadorian side.
Ecuador severed
diplomatic ties with
Colombia after the
Colombian military
launched a cross-border
attack on a camp of the
Revolutionary Armed
Forces of Colombia (FARC)
on March 1.
As to compensation for
damage in the attack
demanded by Ecuador,
Araujo said, "We have
made it clear from the
beginning that we do not
consider paying any
compensation for
fighting against
terrorism. The
compensation issue is
not under discussion."
