Porters Say Wrongly
Accused Of Looting
At San José Airport
The president of the
Presidente de la
Asociación de Maleteros
Unidos, Fernando
Quesada, denied that any
of his porters are
responsible for the
series of looting of
passenger bags at the
Juan Santamaría (san
José) international
airport.
Quesada said that the
porters were unjustly
accused of looting when
the Policía
Aeroportuaria (airport
police) captured a
number of suspected for
entering aircrafts and
looting the bags of
passengers.
Quesada explained that
the looting occurred in
the ramp areas and the
aircrafts themselves,
areas where the porters
do not have access.
The president of the
porters association said
that his members only
provide service from the
carousels to the
counters and only if a
passenger requires a
wheelchair will the
passenger be escorted to
the airplane.
Quesada added that the
porters do not have a
set fee nor a salary and
their services are being
offered for tips by the
passengers and is
concerned that the good
reputation, a reputation
that the porters have
earned through their
honest hard work, is
being soiled.
Quesads said that due to
the bad information
about the links between
the porters and the
losses, passengers are
refusing the services of
the porters.
"When we carry the bags
of a passenger we have
an eye on the bag at all
times and at no time
open any bag. The
looting was done by
others not related to
our work", said Quesada.
