General Cañas Toll
Booths With Free Pass
For 12 Hours Daily
The toll booths of the
autopista General Cañas
will be free weekdays
between 7am and 7pm and
those of the and
Próspero Fernández from
7am and 10am and 3pm and
8pm, in an effort to
reduce congestion that
is caused by the amount
of traffic passing
through the toll booths.
In addition, the toll
booths at both locations
will be free on
Saturdays between 10am
and 1:30pm.
Costa Rican president,
Oscar Arias, last week
announced the
elimination of all tool
booths.
Since the legal process
to eliminate the toll
booths may take some
time the government
decided to extend the
free pass through toll
booths which has been
only during weekday
morning and afternoon
rush hours.
The free pass hours were
set by the Consejo
Nacional de Vialidad (Conavi)
after analyzing traffic
conditions at the toll
booths.
Karla González, ministra
de Obras Públicas y
Transportes, said that
the free pass hours are
the hours when traffic
congestion is the
heaviest and the move
will ease passage and
eliminate the constant
backlogs.
However, the measure has
to first be published in
the government's
official publication, La
Gaceta, which is
expected sometime next
week.
Both the General Cañas
(Alajuela-San José) and
the Próspero Fernández
(Santa Ana-San José) are
two of the heaviest
travelled autopistas.
The MOPT said that the
Braulio Carrillo, the
Florencio del Castillo
and the Naranjo toll
booths will continue to
operate normal and not
have any free passes,
since those highways do
not count with similar
congestion of the
General Cañas and
Próspero Fernández.
