Nicaragua Demands US
Respect
Nicaraguan political
sectors on Friday
demanded respect for the
country's
self-determination and
sovereignty, after
Robert J. Callahan was
alleged to be the US
ambassador to the
Central American nation.
Callahan's background
raises concerns among
local media, as he
served as secretary of
the US embassy in
Honduras in the 1980s,
when the
Washington-encouraged
aggression against
Nicaragua was in full
swing.
Referring to the alleged
naming, El Nuevo Diario
daily reads "A hawk as
new US ambassador. "
Deputy Enrique Saenz
demanded respect for the
Nicaraguan
self-determination and
independence, while
liberal opposition
deputy Jose Pallais
sustained the new
representative must keep
out of national internal
affairs in a
particularly electoral
year.
Anxiety over the alleged
US envoy coincides with
the inauguration of the
new US diplomatic
