Colom, New Guatemala
President
Alvaro Colom will be the
new Guatemalan president
Monday, during a
ceremony to be attended
by over 70 countries,
included 15 heads of
State or Government.
The transfer of power
will take place in the
new Congress of 158
deputies, of which 91
are new and the rest
were re-elected in the
September 2007
elections.
The installment of the
Directive Board will
take place there,
presided over by Eduardo
Meyer, from the National
Unity of Hope.
Current President Oscar
Berger must present his
last working report in
that session.
Once those requirements
have been fulfilled, the
ceremony will move to
the National Theater in
the afternoon, where
Berger will deliver his
farewell speech.
Next, Colom will be
inaugurated as president
of Guatemala, in the
presence of the largest
quantity of
international
delegations ever to meet
in the country for an
event of this nature.
The most important
moment of the protocol
is the new president's
speech, in which he will
establish the
fundamental features of
his administration, not
only in the domestic
policy but also in
international relations.
After the ceremony,
there will be a festival
in the capital's "Plaza
de la Constitucion,"
where the new government
will greet the people.
All this process will
end Tuesday, when
municipal mayors and
corporations will hold
posts in the country's
332 municipalities.
