Legislators Promise To
Take Action Against
Rising Crime
Following the latest
round of shoot-outs
between criminals and
police, placing the
lives of innocents in
danger, has prompted
promises from
legislators, who say
they are taking the
matter seriously.
In the first days of the
year two minors have
been murdered and a
number of organized
gangs have faced each
other and police
resulting in a number of
armed confrontations and
deaths.
Those acts have promoted
legislators to heed to
the call of citizens
demanding security and
promises to act.
The Movimiento
Libertario (ML) has
proposed a special
commission to make
recommendations on the
matter.
The commission is to be
made up of 7
legislators, who will
have the responsibility
to recommend reforms to
the current criminal
laws to put an end to
the wave of delinquency.
Last month, the head of
the Partido Liberación
Nacional (PLN) party in
the legislature, Mayi
Antillón, was a victim
of an assault when her
car window was smashed
and her purse stolen
while she was stopped at
a red light in the
Hatillos.
Antillón appealed to
Costa Rica president,
Oscar Arias, directly to
take action to curb the
rise in the crime that
has gripped the country.
