Ecuador Sets Conditions
For Ties Resumption With
Colombia
Quito - Ecuador said
Wednesday that it is
waiting for a
"respectful" gesture
from Colombia before
resuming bilateral
diplomatic ties.
It is necessary that
Colombia fulfills the
minimum demands
requested by Ecuador to
resume ties, Foreign
Minister Fander Falconi
said in a communique.
Ecuador has asked
Colombia to increase
vigilance on their part
of the shared border and
to stop linking Ecuador
with the Revolutionary
Armed Forces of Colombia
(FARC).
The two neighbors broke
diplomatic ties on March
3, 2008, two days after
the Colombian army
attacked a FARC camp in
Ecuadorian territory
without authorization.
During the raid, the
Colombian military
killed 25 people in
Sucumbios province near
the border between the
two countries.
Falconi said Ecuador has
demanded a report from
Colombia about the
attack, and insists that
the government pay
attention to the
thousands of Colombians
seeking refugee in
Ecuador from the
violence in their
homeland.
While there is no
response to these
requests, "we can not
take a step ahead, to
resume ties," the
foreign minister said.
Falconi added that his
government has been
respectful of the
formulas Colombia has
adopted to solve its
domestic problems, as
long as they don't
infringe upon Ecuador's
territory.
The two nations share a
640-km-long border.
Illegal Colombian armed
groups are said to often
enter Ecuador to avoid
strikes from government
troops or to seek food
and medicine.
