Chileans Asked To Remain Calm After Quakes
Santiago - The Chilean government has called on citizens to remain calm in the wake of a series of earthquakes that has hit central regions of the country since Thursday evening.

"The series of seismic movements that we have felt during the last hours are normal events," said Carmen Fernandez, director of the National Emergencies Office.

There have been no reports of casualties or damages so far, she said, while ruling out the possibility of bigger earthquakes to follow.

An earthquake measuring 5.9 magnitude on the Richter scale rocked Chile Thursday, followed by two aftershocks felt in the capital city of Santiago.

According to the Seismological Institute of the University of Chile, the epicenter of the quake was 75 km north of Valparaiso, a port city on the Pacific coast.
