FMLN Front-runner in El

Salvadorian presidential
candidate for the
Farabundo Marti National
Liberation Front (FMLN)
Mauricio Funes increased
Tuesday by 16 points a
lead over his nearest
rival.
Funes has 44.2 percent
of votes, while his
opponent Rodrigo Avila,
from the Nationalist
Republican Alliance
(ARENA), hardly is at 28
percent, according to a
recent survey carried
out here.
The poll, published
three months before the
March presidential
elections, was carried
out by the Central
American University (UCA)'s
Public Opinion
Institute, and included
nearly 258 national
surveyed.
The survey also reflects
that the progressive
party will get over 40.5
percent of votes,
against 25.3 from ARENA
in the January elections
for mayors and deputies.
According to UCA rector,
priest Jose Maria
Tojeira, faced with the
difficult economic
situation, the FMLN
candidate has stirred up
enormous hopes for a
