Gets Tough On Bus
Drivers
The Policía de Tránsito
has been targeting bus
drivers during the past
few weeks in an effort
to ensure the public who
use public
transportation a safe
ride.
The spotchecks are at
random, concentrated
mainly on routes between
San José and Alajuela.
The process, according
to Huanelgue Gutiérrez,
subdirector de la
Policía de Tránsito,
takes about five minutes
to verify that the
driver has not been
drinking, including a
breathalyzer test if
necessary, and that his
or her driver's license
is in order.
Gutiérrez added that if
the bus does not show
any visible mechanical
problems and no problems
with the driver, it can
continue on its run and
is asking the public to
report any problems to
911 or 800 TRANSITO
(800-87267486).
The subdirector said
that some 20 spotcheck
have already been held
and that no driver so
far has been found to be
drunk behind the wheel.
Spotcheck and
breathalyzer tests are
all normal during
December as this is when
drinking and driving
increases. The Policía
de Tránsito will be
holding some 800
spotchecks during the
month, the majority
during the last two
weeks, to check on all
drivers.
In addition to the
spothchecks, the Policía
de Tránsito will be
increasing their radar
control posts during the
coming weeks and paying
particular attention to
the routes to and from
the beaches and resorts. |
