Immigration On Alert For
Wave of Salvadorans
Entering Costa Rica
The Direccion General
Migracion Costa Rica
(immigration service)
has set up a command
post at Peñas Blancas,
the border with
Nicaragua, to handle the
expected 5.000
Salvadorans that will be
entering Costa Rica
between today and
tomorrow.
The group, travelling in
a caravan of some 100
buses, will be arriving
in Costa Rica for
tomorrows big game
between the Costa Rican
national team and the
national team from El
Salvador.
The game will be played
at the Ricardo Saprissa
stadium, in Tibás,
beginning at 8pm.
The Instituto
Meteorológico Nacional (IMN)
is predicting rain,
including downpours for
game time.
The director of the
Policía de Migracion
(immigration police),
Francisco Castaing, is
concerned at the large
number of possible "mara"
gang members who will
take advantage of the
large influx of people
entering the country,
mixed in with true
soccer fans.
Although the immigration
service has beefed up
its operations at Peñas
Blancas, it fears a
collapse of the system
and has asked the help
of the Fuerza Pública
(police) for added
patrols of the
surrounding areas and
tougher controls at the
spot checks in
Guancaaste to detect
illegals.
At the stadium, security
will be tight. Insulting
signs will no be
permitted, as well as
fans will be checked for
weapons and rowdy fans
will be ejected
immediately by stadium
security.
