Brazilian Priest Gets
Lost in Heaven
The Brazilian Navy is
searching for Catholic
Priest Adelir Antonio de
Carli, 42, who was
reported missing off the
coasts of Santa Catarina
and Parana.
Carli left Paranagua
(southwestern Parana)
for the western region
of Campos Gerais (Mato
Grosso do Sul), flown by
1,000 party balloons
filled with helium.
His experience as a
balloon flier raised him
to the sky on Sunday,
sitting on a small chair
and using water bags as
ballasts. He was wearing
a helmet, thermal suite
and parachute, and he
carried a cell phone.
It was certain since his
departure that the time
of flight and final
destination were
uncertain, because they
depended on weather
conditions, which got
worse and took him
seawards.
According to reports
from the Marine, the
balloon traveler
disappeared 31 miles off
the coast, near the
beach resort of Peña, 46
miles from the port of
Sao Francisco do Sul
(Santa Catarina).
The voyage's goal was to
break the record of
flying 20 hours using
huge party balloons,
Carli said before
departing.
His prior experience
included overflying
several plantations in
Parana and a four-hour
flight that took him
17,300 feet high,
landing in San Antonio,
Argentina.
The priest leads a
parish that helps
motorists spiritually.
Two years ago, he
accused the Municipal
Guard of Parana of
violating beggars' human
