Teachers To Continue
Strike
The teachers strike
called by the Asociación
de Profesores de Segunda
Enseñanza (APSE) will
not be lifted, even
though the Ministerio de
Educación Pública (MEP)
offered teachers a
salary increase.
APSE members have been
on strike since March 31
and has called for a
mass demonstration in
downtown San José
beginning at 9:00am
today. The strikers will
gather at the Parque
Central.
Notwithstanding the APSE
strike, the other
teachers unions - the
Asociación Nacional de
Educadores (Ande), the
Sindicato de Educadores
Costarricenses (SEC) and
the Sindicato Nacional
de Profesores en
Orientación - have not
joined the strike and
according to MEP
minister, Leonardo
Garnier, have accepted
the conditions outlined
in the MEP proposal.
Beatriz Ferreto,
president of APSE, said
yesterday that she had
not been advised
directly of the MEP
proposal.
"The MEP proposal
demonstrates that our
strike is just and
legal", said Ferreto. |
