TSE Begins Distribution
of Referendum Voting
Ballots
The Tribunal Supremo de
Elecciones (TSE)
yesteday began to
distribute the voting
ballots that will be
used by Costa Ricans on
October 7 to decide the
fate of the Tratado de
Libre Comercio (TLC).
In total 4.932 voting
centres in 81 districts
will receive the brown
boxes containing the
ballots that are being
distributed under tight
security.
The remote communities
are the first to receive
the ballots, the TSE
saying it using trucks,
off road vehicles,
helicopters and small
boats to reach the most
of remote communities.
The delivery of the
material is expected to
take until the end of
next week.
The TSE says it printed
some 2.8 million
ballots, almost 800.000
more than required, just
in case voting ballots
don't make it to their
destination.
The ballots are all
numbered and the boxes
contain the exact amount
of ballots for each
voting station based on
the electoral roster.
The extra ballots are
being kept under tight
security at the TSE
offices in San José and
will be available only
in the event of
emergency.
