Nicaragua calls for
international aid in
wake of Hurricane Felix
Nicaragua called on
Friday for aid from the
international community
to help it recover from
the damage caused by
Hurricane Felix.
President Daniel Ortega
said his government is
evaluating the damage
caused by Felix, which
hit Nicaragua on
September 4 with
category-five winds and
rain that left 102
people dead and 86
missing and destroyed
19,000 homes.
""The damages have been
immense and we still do
not have a precise view
of the losses in all
sectors,"" Ortega said.
Ortega expressed thanks
for the aid that
continues to come to the
188,000 hurricane
victims in the Central
American country.
Ortega said the United
Nations plans to make a
call on Friday in New
York to seek more
international aid for
Nicaragua's recovery.
Felix was a
category-five storm on
the Saffir-Simpson scale
with winds that reached
more than 260 km per
hour when it hit
Nicaragua.
