Avenida 4 Boulevard Will
Be Solely For
Pedestrians
The Municipalidad de San
José reached an
agreement with the
Ministerio de Obras
Públicas y Transportes (MOPT)
to eliminate completely
the bus stops along
Avenida 4 thus making
the "bulevar"
(pedestrian walkway)
under construction on
the south side of
downtown San José,
completely vehicle free.
The original design
contemplated a mixed use
for the boulevard where
vehicles would share
space with pedestrians
from the corner of the
Diario Extra offices to
the west to the Parque
La Merced, while the
east side would be
totally vehicular free.
However, conversations
between the
Municipalidad and the
Consejo de Transporte
Público (CTP) surrounded
the removal of all buses
from Avenida 4 as the
MOPT prepares to renew
bus route concessions
this year, giving way to
a decision by the CTP
board of directores to
relocate the bus stops
now on Avenida 4.
The mayor of San José.
Johnny Araya, yesterday
showed his pleasure at
the CTP decision and
that the boulevard will
be only for pedestrians
as boulevards should be.
The decision will now
allow the municipality
to plant trees and
landscape the boulevard
and allow the location
of kiosks similar to the
boulevard along Avenida
Cental.
Araya said yesterday
that 12 kiosks that will
be allowed along the
entire boulevard will
soon come up for bidding
that will include coffee
shops, banks and ice
cream sales.
For the time being the
relocation of the bus
stops from Avenida 4 is
yet unknown as the CTP
technicians complete a
study of the area and
will make their decision
known in the coming
weeks, according to
Javier Vargas, president
of the CTP. |
