Hurricane Evacuees
The team of 57 Cuban
doctors and nurses
working at the Region
Autonoma del Atlantico
Norte (RAAN), on
Nicaragua's Caribbean
Coast, are ready for
hurricane Felix.
Luis Carlos Avila, head
of a team of eight
doctors working in
Puerto Cabezas, 333
miles NE Managua, said
they were evacuated
along with their
patients and hospital.
Avila added that another
40 Cuban physicians are
working in Waspam, a
city further north that
is also in the path of
the storm.
He added that another 57
doctors are working at
the Region Autonoma del
Atlantico Sur. They are
all at safe places
assisting the evacuees.
Some 10,000 people were
evacuated in the north
of RAAN, an area that
Hurricane Felix is
expected to slam early
Tuesday with heavy rains
and winds of 139.59 m h.
Officials from the Civil
Defense and National
Disaster Relief and Aid
System are also deployed
at the area of possible
impact along Health
Minister Maritza Cuan,
while the Education
Ministry has set up
schools to serve as
shelters.
President Daniel Ortega,
who cut short his
official visit to Panama
Monday, urged the people
to stay calm and
promised official
support for the
hurricane victims. |
