ICE Announces Digital Billing
Customers of the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) - the state monopoly on communications - can now get their phone bill by email in place of a printed monthly bill.

The change allows customers to get their monthly bill electronically and not have to wait for the printed bill to show up in their mail box. The change is extremely beneficial to cellular telephone subscribers who have to have a postal box to receive their bill or visit an ICE agency to have one printed.

ICE says that it already has 21.000 customers signed up to receive their bills by emial.

The move, according to Luis Roberto Hernández, of the Planificación y Desarrollo de Mercados de Telecomunicaciones del ICE, will also save the institution money on paper and provide detailed billing more efficiently.

The program is called "Factura Digital" - digital invoice - and can be subscribed to by calling the 115 or online at www.grupoice.com or by visiting any ICE agency in the country.

The service is free. ICE says that to subscribe the customer has to be current with his billing.

With the change, ICE customers can now receive their monthly statement and pay their bill online.

For some time now customers can pay their telephone bill at any bank or supermarket without the need to have a printed bill, by simply providing the telephone number the bank teller or supermarket cashier can call up the amount owed and accept payment which is credited to the customers account immediately.

The Factura Digital program is part of the Institution's "Agencia Virtual" that allows customers access to their billing 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, where most of the agency's services and transactions can be done online or by telephone, without the need to visit an ICE agency.
