Guatemala Ready for
Runoff
Guatemalan authorities
are speeding up
arrangements for the
November 4 runoffs to
elect president and vice
president, and repeat
voting in three
municipalities.
According to Julio
Solorzano, from the
Supreme Electoral Court
(TSE), workers from that
institution will count
and inspect ballot
papers before being sent
to polling stations
throughout the country.
The task consists in
reviewing the printed
material for the
presidential election
and municipal mayors in
the departments of San
Marcos, Solola and Alta
Verapaz, where the
September 9 polls were
annulled.
TSE president Oscar
Bolanos stated that the
country decided to
increase budget for
departmental elections
and the central
district, to guarantee
the necessary inputs
during the event.
About 5.9 million
Guatemalans are expected
to participate in the
November 4 vote, to
elect their future
governors for the
2008-2012 period.
Observers of the process
predict a very
hard-fought result
between Alvaro Colom,
from the National Unity
of Hope, and Otto Perez
Molina, from the
Patriotic Party. |
