ICE Announces Increased
Internet Service
Connections
The Instituto
Costarricense de
Electricidad (ICE) - the
monopoly on
telecommunications -
said it has signed a
deal with GBM and
Samsung to install and
provide high speed
internet service in more
than 200 communities by
2008.
The announcement was
made by Claudio Bermúdez,
manager of
telecommunications at
ICE, who added that the
service will employ the
latest technology and
tools for the end user.
According to ICE,
internet demand grew
300% between 2005 and
2007 and the new service
is expected to double
that when the system
will employ 179.000
ports, providing access
to more subscribers at
any one time.
However, internet
subscribers have to wait
and see if the dream
becomes a reality as ICE
has had a history of
announcing plans and
services only to stall
their implementation,
leaving end users
waiting.
