Workers Blame Dow
Chemical, Dole for
Sterility
LOS ANGELES (AP) - A
jury in Los Angeles,
California, is about to
consider claims by
Nicaraguan banana
workers that Dow
Chemical and Dole Food
companies are
responsible for making
them sterile.
A dozen banana farm
workers filed a suit
that says exposure to
the pesticide DBCP in
the 1970s interfered
with their fertility.
The lawsuit says Dow hid
information about the
pesticide's effects.
Midland (Michigan)-based
Dow and Westlake
Village,
California-based Dole
deny responsibility.
The U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency
approved using the
chemical until 1979,
while Nicaragua banned
it in 1993.
