Sunday's referendum on
the Tratado de Libre
Comercio (TLC) - free
trade agreement with the
United States - will be
the most internationally
observed electoral event
in history, authorities
in San José confirmed.
Javier Vega, who is
responsible for the
Tirbunal Supremo de
Elecciones (TSE) program
of attention to
observers, said that
never before has there
been so much interest
about elections in the
Central American nation.
This is unprecedented,
said Vega, who
highlighted the
fundamental role of
international
observation to
legitimize the process.
"People visiting us will
have the opportunity to
witness the electoral
institutionality's
effectiveness and
performance," he said.
In addition to about 200
TSE guests, there will
be an unspecified number
of people who will come,
attracted by the fact
that this is the only
country in the isthmus
where a free trade
agreement with the US is
subject to the people's
approval, stressed Vega.
At least two million
Costa Ricans are
expected to go to the
polls on Sunday to
decide whether the free
trade agreement with the
US is brought to
fruition. |
