Legislator Proposes
Physical Punishment of
Children Be Written Into
Law
Guyon Massey feels that
taking the belt to one
child is a form of
disciplining them and
the legislator wants it
into law as his proposal
has sparked controversy
in the Legislative
Assembly.
Massey is facing tough
criticism for his
proposal from parents
and institutions that
defend the rights of
children, like the el
Patronato Nacional de la
Infancia (PANI), who
rejects any form of
physical punishment and
is pushing hard for
legislation to eliminate
it completely.
However, what do the
children think? A poll
by the Fundación
PANIAMOR and Save the
Children reveals that
79% of the children
polled feel sad after
the physical punishment
and 47% believe that
children should never be
punished physically, 40%
said they felt guilty
and 38% considered it a
bad thing.
Legislators, the
majority parents
themselves, now have to
make up their mind and
decide is physical
punishment will be
written into law or
leave it up to the
parents to make that
