Costa Rica Tops In
Democracy
Costa Rica tops in
democracy like no other
nation in Latin America,
where that political
system has lost ground
during the last year,
according to the
international
organization
Latinobarómetro.
The percentage of Costa
Ricans who favor
democracy increased from
75 percent in 2006 to 83
percent this year, when
the first referendum
ever was held, the
organization reports.
Latinobarómetro is an
annual public opinion
survey that involves
some 19,000 interviews
in 18 Latin American
countries, representing
more than 400 million
inhabitants.
Latinobarómetro
Corporation is a
non-profit NGO based in
Santiago, Chile, and is
solely responsible for
the production and
publication of the data.
Latinobarómetro
Corporation researches
the development of
democracy and economies
as well as societies,
using indicators of
opinion, attitudes,
behaviour and values.
Its results are used by
social and political
actors, international
organizations,
governments and the
media.
The executive director
of the study is Marta
Lagos.
On July 9,
Latinobarómetro signed
an agreement with the
University of Essex’s UK
Data Archive in order to
provide users of the
English system with
direct access to its
data bank.
