Venezuela Says OPEC Summit Political
Venezuelan Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez said Friday in this capital that the Summit of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries' Chiefs of State has a political character.

ó The fact that oil producing countries are here protecting our resources is a political reality, ó Ramirez told press shortly after arriving in Saudi Arabia to polish details of the summit beginning Saturday.

Venezuela considers it is not necessary to increase the oil offer to alleviate the upward trend of prices, the minister pointed out, and added ó we do not come here to talk about prices. ó

After rejecting the vision that OPEC is a merely economic organization, the minister stressed the importance of the political dimension of the group, which controls nearly 42 percent of world oil production.

Otherwise, Ramirez told press, ó we would be in the hands of the World Trade Organization or any other international agreement, which would impose economic conditions with terrible political consequences for oil producers.
