Newly Literate Grads
Another 600 Panamanians
are due to start
Wednesday new working
and training
opportunities, after
receiving their literacy
certificates from the
hands of President
Martin Torrijos.
Committed to making the
"Muevete por Panama"
campaign a sign of his
government, Torrijos
presided over the act
held in Bocas del Toro,
311 miles of the
capital.
The learning action is
carried out with the
efficient Cuban method "Yo
Si Puedo" (Yes, I Can),
with video-classes
filmed by Panamanian
actors and supported by
5,000 voluntary
teachers.
The act was the scene
for the delivery of
1,900 public assistance
checks from the
Opportunity Network.
The idea of a literacy
campaign emerged when
the government
discovered that several
women could not sign
checks from the
assistance program,
because they did not
know to read and write.
The president stated
that there are 36,500
families in extreme
poverty benefited
through the Opportunity
Network and this year's
goal is to reach 50,000. |
