Azul Dump Could Really Be Closed This Time
The Ministra de Salud (Health minister, María
Luisa Ávila, is set on closing down the Rio Azul
landfill and if she keeps her word, the dump
will be closed as early as next month, when the
Aserrí dump should be ready.
The closure of the Rio Azul dump has been
postponed during the past 10 years by each new
government after a nother. The process always
ends up with the same result, the dump continues
to remain open even though its useful life ended
a decade ago.
However, minister Avila seems a bit more adamant
than her predecessors and the lock on the gates
could be just around the corner. Avila said
yesterday that she does not want the game to
continue and this time the dump will be closed
for good.
The garbage that now goes to Rio Azul will soon
be heading for El Guaso de Aserrí, both sites
located south of San José.
