Central American Red Cross Plan for Disasters
Representatives from 25 associations of the Red
Cross in Central America and the Caribbean began
a meeting in Panama Monday to draw up strategies
to face possible disasters in the region this
hurricane season.
The four-day gathering is focusing on
contingency plans and coordination to face an
active hurricane season, according to the Pan
American Disasters Response Unit.
Topics include refugees, humanitarian reform,
and challenges because of climate change s
affect on intensity and frequency of storms.
PADRU chief Stephen McAndrew highlighted the
importance of readiness to face meteorological
phenomena and their consequences because 2006
was an average year and we are worried that
people may lower their guard, he said.
PADRU predicts 16 storms until the end of
November, eight of which expected to become
hurricane-strength.
