Guatemala Calls General
Elections
Guatemala s Electoral Supreme
Court (TSE) on Wednesday will
call the general elections for
September, when the president,
vice president, deputies, and
municipal governments will be
elected.
TSE President Oscar Bolaños said
the official campaign is ready
to begin, and highlighted 687
new electoral districts will be
created nationwide.
With the new electoral
districts, the number of people
who preside over a polling
station on election day will
almost double that of 2003, thus
facilitating the vote of the 5.8
million people registered.
Overcoming high abstentionism
levels averaging 46 percent in
the last 15 years is precisely
one of the challenges for
Guatemalan authorities and
political groups.
