UCR To Help DIsabled and
Indigenous With
Referendum
The Tribunal Supremo de
Elecciones (TSE) -
elections tribunal in
charge of holding the
free trade referendum on
October 7 - has asked
the Universidad de Costa
Rica (UCR) for help in
getting their message to
the public with a
hearing disability.
In total 25 UCR sign
language interpreters,
in addition to their
professors, will be on
hand to help out the
disabled understand the
referendum process.
Using videos, the
message using sign
language, in addition to
television programs.
they will explain how
and where to vote.
There are an estimated
50.000 deaf in Costa
Rica.
In addition, the UCR
will help the get the
referendum message to
the indigenous,
translating the message
to Bribri, Cabecar and
other dialects used in
indigenous communities.
The UCR is clear about
their role, that they
are not involved in the
politics of the
referendum, that is they
will not sway their
message in either
direction, only provide
factual information on
the voting process.
