Future of San Carlos Highway Up In The Air
For almost forty years, residents of San Carlos have lived through frustrated attempts of seeing a decent road built leading to San José. At last, the government of Taiwan through with a us$15 million dollar donation, and with a loan for the other us$35 million dollars, the road began to take shape.

However, now that is all up in the air with the announcement last week of the government breaking diplomatic ties with Taiwan, favouring China.

The Taiwanese quickly responded by cancelling all financial aid, some us$70 million dollars, to Costa Rica.

According to the contract for the construction of the road between San Carlos and San Ramón, the project was for a four year period. Only one has passed.

The president of the Asociación Sancarleña assures residents that Costa Rican president, Oscar Arias, will solve the financial problem for the project and is expected to make an announcement this week.

Perhaps, one of the solutions is the confirmation on the Chinese News Agency (CNA.com) that reported the road builder as saying that the Taiwanese would continue to fund the project, despite the breaking of diplomatic ties.
