Paramilitary Debate
Stirs Colombia
The controversial
Justice and Peace
process, fostered by the
Colombian government is
currently undergoing an
increasing controversy
due to pressure by ex
paramilitary chiefs in
prison and President
Alvaro Uribe's support
of their demands.
In statements to a radio
station on Wednesday,
Supreme Court of Justice
President Cesar Valencia
announced that this
institution would
maintain the sentence
that denied the
demobilized paramilitary
agents the possibility
of being tried for
sedition.
With that assertion, he
ignored the statements
by the president, who
has expressed his
disagreement with that
decision and asked that
paramilitary agents and
guerrillas be treated
equally.
Uribe supported the main
ex paramilitary chiefs
in jail, who refused to
continue confessing
their crimes before
justice until the
Supreme Court changes
its decision.
Analysts consider that
the position of force by
the ex paramilitary
chiefs of the Colombian
United Self-defense has
the objective of keeping
the door open to be able
to participate in
politics in the future,
and shows their
