Excursion Ends In
Tragedy: 1 Dead, 59
Injured
An excursion to the
Depósito Libre de
Golfito (Golfito Duty
Free) in the southern
zone of the country
ended in tragedy with
the death of one person
and the injury of 59
others.
The accident occurred in
the area known as Vuelta
del Sapo in Caña
Blanacal de Palmar
Norte, Osa.
Sixty five year old
María Nely García Calvo
was the only victim in
the accident, dying in
hospital last night.
A total of five Cruz
Roja (Red Cross) units
responded to the
accident, taking 16
passengers to the
ospital Tomás Casas de
Ciudad Cortés where they
were admitted and
another 22 to the
Clínica de Palmar Sur
for evaluation.
María Nely's condition
was so grave that she
was airlifted by the
Servicio de Vigilancia
Aérea of the Fuerza
Pública to the San Juan
de Díos hospital in San
José, where last night
she lost the battle to
survive.
The accident occurred at
11:40am.
The Tránsito official at
the scene said that the
driver of the bus,
Guillermo Salazar
Murillo, told him that
he lost control of
the bus to avoid a head
on collision with a
vehicle who had crossed
the median.
The bus travelled some
40 metres off the road,
hit an electrical post
and flipped over.
The bus had left
Alajuela at 6:00am from
the Parque Central in
San José. Passengers
told authorities that
the trip had been
peaceful until stopping
for breakfast in Buenos
Aires around 10:00am.
One of the passengers,
Nicole Zúñiga Mesén,
said that after
breakfast, the bus was
travelling at high speed
and assures that when
the driver came to the
curve on the road,
because of the high
speed, he lost control.
Other passengers had the
same story to tell.
The Policía de Tránsito
is investigating the
cause of the accident. |
