Costa Ricans Living
Longer Than Japanese
A recent study reveals
that Costa Rican men are
living longer that
Japanese men, who have
had first place in the
world for longevity.
Currently there are some
10.000 Costa Ricans who
are older than 90 years
of age and some 300
centenarians.
Luis Roxero began to
investigate the aging of
Costa Ricans some three
years ago and while the
investigation is
continuing, the results
have been overwhelming.
The investigation
reveals that in the year
200 there were 300.000
Ticos over the age of 65
and by expectation is
that there will be more
than 2 million over 65
by the year 2060.
It is that expectation
that puts Costa Ricans
on top of the list,
however, mainly for men.
The investigation
reveals that Costa Rican
men live longer than the
women because there not
obese, count on the
support and visit of
family and are not sent
to old age homes. In
addition, the
investigation reveals
that the majority of
Ticos do not depend on
their children and have
savings.
The largest number of
Costa Ricans over 90 and
100 years of age are
found in Nicoya.
Experts hope that based
on their findings the
government will begin
taking measures, like
adopting policies to
guarantee a good pension
system.
The study will continue
for another two years
and is following the
tracks of some 3.000
seniors. |
