Guatemala for Youth
Olympic Games
Guatemala offered to
host the first Youth
Olympic Games in 2010,
after the idea to
celebrate such event was
approved here.
The initiative was
presented by IOC
president Jacques Rogge,
and later supported by
delegates at the 119th
meeting of the
International Olympic
Committee in Guatemala.
The competitions will be
directed to young
athletes between 14 and
18 years old, and have
the winter and summer
modalities, like that of
adults, but with lesser
disciplines.
The former IOC
president, Spanish Juan
Antonio Samaranch, said
this is the most
important step made by
the movement in the last
years.
Willy Kaltschmitt, the
IOC member for
Guatemala, indicated the
country is eligible to
organize the projected
games, and will try to
win its venue. |
