Highways Cause Driver
Risk
Waking up to find a
vehicle has crashed into
the front of your home
is not an uncommon
occurrence. Actually it
happens more often than
one can imagine.
The reason is the lack
of proper planning and
the growing disorder of
residential construction
near highways.
The Consejo se Seguridad
Vial (road safety
council) says that the
number of homes being
erected near highways
and homeowners erecting
posts and barriers in
front of their homes to
avoid a vehicle crashing
trough their living
rooms is growing.
This practice, although
it is aimed at
protecting property, the
Consejo se Seguridad
Vial says is becoming
becoming a risk factor
for drivers, as the
posts and barriers are
not meeting the
requirements for road
safety.
During the first five
months of this year a
total of 156 people have
lost their lives
resulting from traffic
accidents, even though
the Consejo se Seguridad
Vial has stepped up it
campaign promoting
responsible driving and
the use of the seatbelt.
During this and the
coming week, the Policía
de Tránsito is out in
full force keeping an
eye on the roads with
spot checks, radars and
breathalyzers to ensure
a safe holiday as
children are enjoying
the mid-year break. |
