Panama Jails Overflowing
Over 11,400 people are behind
bars in Panama, in prisons with
capacity for a bit over 7,000,
official sources revealed
Wednesday.
A release from the Government
and Interior Justice Ministry
said there are 11,473 prisoners
in the country, of whom 10,748
are men.
The province of Panama records
the highest number of prisoners,
7,621, half of them at La Joyita,
the report added.
Government and Justice Minister
Olga Golcher recently admitted
the faults of the penitentiary
system and the corruption
prevailing in those centers.
Over 50 prison personnel were
dismissed last year for being
involved in irregular
activities.
