Foreigners Fail Exams
In
order to obtain Costa Rican
citizenship, foreigners have to
take exams in Social Studies and
Spanish, but half of the
applicants fail, mostly because
of their lack of knowledge in
the history and geography of the
country.
Besides meeting other
requirements, the exams must be
taken by Spanish and Latin
American nationals who have
lived here for at least five
years and by people from other
countries who have lived here
for at least seven years and who
apply for Costa Rican
citizenship.
The exam requirement is waived
for foreigners applying for
citizenship based on their
marriage to a Costa Rican
citizen.
