Blood Bank Urgently
Requires Donations
The Banco Nacional de
Sangre (National Blood
Bank) is making an
urgent plea for donors

Director, Erna Meléndez
Bolaños, says that 50%
of the blood required by
hospitals is supplied by
the blood bank and
currently the blood bank
is working without
reserves to attend a
massive emergency.
The other 50% of the
blood used in hospital
comes from a "a blood
replacement program"
where patients are
required to provide
blood donors to the
hospital peforming the
surgery.
Meléndez said that
unfortunately blood
donations drop
drastically during the
holidays while the need
of hospital increases.
Each month the blood
bank received some 2.000
donations, according to
Meléndez.
The blood bank director
said that all kinds of
blood types are needed,
even though the greates
demand is for "O
positive".
To donate blood in Costa
Rica the following
requirements must be
met: the donor must be
healthy, be between the
ages of 18 and 60 and
weigh more than 50 Kg.
The blood bank is
located in Zapote on the
south side of the
