Guatemala Reaffirms
Interest in Petrocaribe
Guatemalan
President-elect Alvaro
Colom confirmed in this
capital on Friday that
he would meet soon with
his Venezuelan
counterpart, Hugo
Chavez, to discuss his
country's adhesion to
the energy project
Petrocaribe.
We are working on the
possibility of
conceiving
Petroguatemala to be
able to join Petrocaribe,
Colom told reporters at
a news conference in
Nicaragua, where he met
with President Daniel
Ortega on Friday.
The president-elect, who
will be sworn in on
January 14, said he
would bring up the issue
during his meeting with
Chavez on December 10 in
Argentina, where they
will attend the
swearing-in ceremony of
President Cristina
Fernandez de Kirchner.
That would be the main
issue that I will
discuss with President
Chavez, said Colom, who
left for Panama after
paying a courtesy visit
to Ortega on Friday.
Asked about Guatemala's
eventual adhesion to the
Bolivarian Alternative
for the Americas (ALBA),
the president-elect
noted that possibility
would be analyzed in the
national dialogue that
will begin in his
country in January.
The ALBA is an
integrationist
initiative being boosted
by Venezuela, Cuba,
Bolivia and Nicaragua,
while Petrocaribe is an
energy cooperation
project promoted by
Caracas to benefit the
Caribbean countries.
The signatories of
Petrocaribe are Antigua
and Barbuda, Bahamas,
Belize, Cuba, Dominique,
Grenada, Guyana,
Jamaica, Nicaragua, the
Dominican Republic,
Saint Kitts and Nevis,
Saint Lucia, Saint
Vincent and the
Grenadines, Surinam and
Venezuela. |
