Guanacaste Airport
Expects More Than Double
Number of Tourists
The Daniel Oduber
International airport in
Liberia has been buzzing
with activity even
though the official
"high" season doesn't
commence until December
16 and runs to April,
seeing an increase in
the number of visitors
since last month.
The airport, between
December and April, is
expected to see the
arrival of 60 flights
daily, more than double
the 24 daily flights the
airport has seen during
the past rainy season.
According to airport
administrator, Analive
Rosales, Monday and
Saturdays are the days
with the most number of
daily flights, some of
which will be arriving
at the same time.
Flights arriving at the
international airport
are all spaced out, not
taxing the airports
resources and providing
prompt service to
travellers arriving and
departing. The increased
volume will change that
as lines, similar to
that at the Juan
Santamaría (San José)
international airport,
begin to form at certain
times.
Visitors arriving
directly to the
Guanacaste airport are
expected to spend, on
average, us$2.200 during
their stay, not
including the cost of
the airfare. Visitors
arriving at the Juan
Santamaría, for
instance, only spend on
average us$1.323.
According to airport
statistics, as of
December 31, 400.000
passengers - coming and
leaving - will have used
the airport. Forecasts
by the Aviación Civil
and the Cámara de
Turismo de Guanacaste (Caturgua)
had been at half of
that.
The forecast for the
2007-2008 high season
expects to see the
arrival of 240.000
tourists who will land
directly in Guanacaste.
During the last high
season (2006-2007) only
86.000 tourists arrived
and the year before
)2005-2006) 79.000.
To meet the demand of
the growth at the
airport, the government
has committed to invest
us$15 million dollars to
expand the airport that
will include a new
passenger terminal. The
work on the new terminal
is expected to begin in
January and to be
finished one year later.

Oduber international
airport in Liberia,

processed in a warehouse
style building that only
counts with ventilators
to blow away the heat
while waiting their turn
through immigration and
customs checks. |
